As we have discussed, individuals who have experienced severe and repeated trauma typically struggle with a range of serious physical and emotional symptoms. Some of these symptoms include feeling chronically on edge, chronically numb and flat, or alternating between the two; feeling like previously experienced traumas are happening again in the present (re-experiencing emotions and/or sensations); spacing out or detaching from reality; difficulties with thinking or attention; unusual sensory experiences; and physical experiences like pain, difficulty breathing, digestive problems, or sexual problems. Those who are not knowledgeable about complex trauma may conclude that such a severe and varied constellation of symptoms must be inexplicable, unrelated, exaggerated, or even completely made up. Many patients with trauma-related disorders (TRDs) have spent years hearing and believing such messages from health care providers and possibly friends and family. This often leaves them in a state of confusion and distress in which they may belittle and disrespect themselves and their experiences. They may feel they are “making it all up,” are “too sensitive” or maybe are even “crazy.” Therapists working with chronically traumatized individuals must have a coherent theoretical framework for understanding these symptoms in order to educate their patients and to guide their response to what can seem like a baffling level of wide-ranging problems.

The term recapitulation, in the context of pre and perinatal psychology, refers to ways of coping with stressful situations that stimulate unresolved prenatal and birth trauma. Recapitulation styles are the unconscious behavioural patterns that come from our attempts to manage this stress (ie. the inappropriate behaviours associated with our Super Conductive Survival Systems). Our recapitulation styles will be shaped by many factors, including how we dealt with the original stress or trauma. For example, if our experience of birth was that we nearly died but managed to survive by keeping going, we may recapitulate that, later in life, by feeling that we have to keep going, when we feel pressured. That might serve us well in many ways, but it may mean that we don’t allow ourselves time to rest and build our resources. We do not even know that this is possible. It is as if we have a blind spot: a gap in our neurology. Underlying this behaviour there is an unconscious motivator which is the fear that ‘if I stop, I will die’.

Wird das „Kind" „nachholend" gerettet statt als Kind-Repräsentanz im Damals verstanden, kann sich rasch eine maligne Regression entwickeln: Immer mehr Rettung und Außenstrukturierung führen in einen Prozess, der dieses innere Kind zum Kampfplatz nachholender Wiedergutmachung und therapeutischer Erschöpfung macht. In solchen Fällen wird die bereits erarbeitete Kompensation langfristig zerstört, werden frühere kindliche Lösungsmuster erneut einen breiten Raum einnehmen, die unbewusst agierte Hilflosigkeit wird zur Überlebensposition - in der endlosen Hoffnung auf Erlösung. Der Prozess „steht" über einer unstillbaren Sehnsucht nach Übertragungsbefriedigung.

Since the further back in history one goes the lower the level of childrearing, it follows that children in the past grew up in houses of horrors that were like those of dissociated personalities of today. Psychiatric studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between elevated levels of dissociative symptoms—separate alters, depersonalization, derealization — and the amount of early physical, sexual and emotional abuse. That the average person before the modern period walked streets full of spirits, demons, gods and other alters is evidence of the dissociation that resulted from their routine abuse and neglect as children. Historical evolution of the psyche, therefore, is the slow, uneven process of integrating fragmented selves into the unified self that is the goal of modern upbringing.

Wir können heute aufgrund empirischer Untersuchungen sagen, dass die Selbstmordinszenierung in ihrer jeweiligen Ausgestaltung dem Ablauf der Geburt folgt. Wenn eine Geburt mit gewaltsamen Beeinträchtigungen verbunden war, dann wird der Tod durch gewalttätige Mittel, wie Sich-vor-den-Zug-Werfen oder Erschießen, gesucht, wenn aber die Geburt durch eine narkotische Betäubung bestimmt war, dann wird der Tod eher durch bewußtseinslähmende Mittel wie Schlaftabletten o.ä. angestrebt.
Immer wieder wird in der Literatur der Wunsch des Suizidenten betont, sich wieder mit dem mütterlichen Urwesen zu vereinigen, was nur über eine geburtsregressive Rückkehr in die pränatale Welt möglich erscheint. Insofern sind die Suizidinszenierungen entgleiste Wiedervereinigungs- und Wiedergeburtsbemühungen, um sich in einer ausweglosen Lebenssituation zu erneuern. Dieses Gefühl der Ausweglosigkeit kann wiederum eine Wurzel in einer pränatalen oder perinatalen Schädigung haben.

There is no doubt that traumatic experiences and frustration of basic needs in childhood and infancy represent an important source of ‘malignant aggression’. However, in the last several decades, psychedelic research and deep experiential psychotherapies have revealed additional significant roots of violence in deep recesses of the psyche that lie beyond postnatal biography. Thus feelings of vital threat, pain, and suffocation experienced for many hours during the passage through the birth canal generate enormous amounts of murderous aggression that remains repressed and stored in the organism. As Sigmund Freud pointed out in his book Mourning and Melancholia, repressed aggression turns into depression and self-destructive impulses. Perinatal energies and emotions thus by their very nature represent a mixture of murderous and suicidal drives.

Ich habe diese englische Hebamme so ausführlich zitiert, weil ich ihren Aufsatz, der 1924 in der »Internationalen Zeitschrift für Psychoanalyse« erschien, für ein Dokument menschlicher Einfühlung und mutiger Wahrhaftigkeit halte. Der Artikel schildert zum einen die erschreckende Uneinfühlsamkeit im Umgang mit dem Neugeborenen in der damaligen Zeit und gibt gleichzeitig auch eine Fülle von Anregungen, die in der modernen Geburtsbewegung inzwischen umgesetzt sind. Dorothy Garley hat durch ihre Worte das Tabu gebrochen, wahrhaftig und öffentlich über die Notseite der Geburt und des Geborenwerdens zu sprechen. Wir wissen, dass auch unter den Psychoanalytikern nur ganz wenige die Kraft und den Willen hatten, hier offen zu sein. Eine davon ist Phyllis Greenacre, die in den vierziger Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts Artikel über die lebensgeschichtliche Bedeutung der Geburtsangst schrieb, doch ahnungsvoll bemerkte:
